Welcome to Hibiscus Cottage and to La Ruelmain, a tiny rural village of traditional Breton stone buildings dating from the seventeenth century. On the southern bank of the Vilaine river it sits where the land rises from the pastures of the old flood plain (le marais) to a long wooded ridge overlooking the river. The village of St Dolay is 2 miles away, the pretty leisure port of La Roche Bernard, 7 miles, and a choice of beaches just 20 minutes away.
A self-catering holiday
If your idea of the perfect holiday place is rural tranquility with freedom to wander undisturbed through a wide landscape or sit and laze in your own garden, with occasional forays to beaches and historic sites or to sample the famous Breton cuisine, then this is for you. Especially if you like to sit and watch wildlife: birds abound . . . birds of the river valley, migrants including hoopoes and storks, garden birds and raptors of all kinds; in the woods are deer and wild boars; when the sun comes out watch the lizards playing up and down the walls, and butterflies from the earliest brimstones and orangetips to hairstreaks, marbled whites and the red admirals and tortoiseshell of late summer; swallowtails and even in some years Camberwell beauties.
You can walk or cycle from Hibiscus Cottage on a huge network of waymarked tracks and country roads. The Vilaine river is half a mile away, the towpath of the Brest to Nantes canal just a bit further.
Hibiscus Cottage is a completely self-contained pied-a-terre for two people (plus baby) with its own private courtyard garden and everything you need to chill out. Click on the link on the left of the cottage picture to see details.
